i’m working on my report for art history class where i attended 3 years ago. yes it is… it is a long long time ago.
and it is the time i finally have done with this report.
anyway it is a quite interesting theme.
i’m studying about medieval paintings those are involved with a story of philosopher aristotle.

it’s really interesting to study why this great philosopher of century
gave his back to a woman to ride on.
the story is …
aristotle was a teacher of young alexander the great.
after young alexander was fell in love with beautiful woman
phillis(she was a maid of his mother),
he didn’t concentrate on his study anymore.
his teacher aristotle was angry about his student
and warned against beautiful women.
finally he forbad young alexander to meet phillis.
phillis who couldn’t see her lover anymore decided to avenge aristotle.
one day, aristotle was walking around in the garden. on that day, phillis especially looked beautiful. because she glamed up herself with pretty dress and flowers.
she went to the garden and approached to aristotle.
at first sight his heart was stolen away from phillis’es irresistible beauty. he wanted love from her. phillis who was waiting for this moment, said to him.
“if you want to take my love, let me ride on your back around whole this garden!”
beauty of a woman blinded a great phillosopher, a great teacher.
he took her on his back, and took down his fame and honor.
alright!
as i found the background of this story, this is not a real story.
this actually was a very popular story in 13th-century in france, written by Henri d’Andeli.
and this story became a very frequently used motive for medieval paintings.
this story sounds very exciting but it’s not that easy to analyse
social and cultural contexts in this story and why so popular this story was.
what i’m interested in is
why did the author especially find out aristotle for the role in this story?
there are also other great phillosophers like socrates.
was aristotle’s theory unwelcome at that time?
if yes, why?
